Duration: 5 days
Grade: T2/T3 - Narrower but distinct tracks, which can be muddy in some places, in pristine natural environments. Facilities are minimal and you will encounter few other walkers. This moderate tour requires a reasonable level of fitness.
Our walk to the Walls of Jerusalem from Lake Ada on the Central Plateau starts on the flat and featureless high plateau (1100m) of the Conservation Area, and then proceeds for a short while on an old access track to the National Park. The scenery then becomes increasingly diverse and disarmingly attractive. Walkers will discover a special region populated initially by a "moonscape" of stark white trunks of pencil pines burnt in a disastrous bush fire some 40 years ago. It gradually transforms into a wild and special place: filled with thousands of small alpine lagoons, tarns and lakes, and healthy stands of ancient pencil pine groves, amongst stunted snow gums and rugged weathered dolerite outcrops.
We camp overnight at the beautiful Lake Fanny, with its bright green cushion plants and rushing outflow channel of crystal-clear water.
The following night is at a remote and pretty site amid the pencil pines next to a limpid tarn. Depending on the mood, we may base camp here and use this as an exploration base to visit the Walls, or alternatively we will descend through the Damascus Gate in the Walls area and make our base camp at the Pool of Bethesda. From either base we can explore the stunning surrounding stands of ancient pines and numerous tarns, and also ascend Mt Jerusalem (1459m), Solomon's Throne (1410m) and The Temple (1446m) before breaking camp to start our return journey. We return by a different route and camp at another stunning lake, Lunka Lake, before rejoining our access track to Lake Ada.
This is an undemanding gem of a walk in a little-visited area of the Central Highlands, with easy access to the Walls, memorablescenery and a huge diversity of alpine plant life. A perfect setting to completely "getaway from it all"!
