The Freycinet Peninsula, on Tasmania's east coast, is the location of the exquisite and renowned Wineglass Bay and the photogenic red granite peaks of The Hazards. It enjoys a mild year-round climate: warm and dry in summer, cool and temperate in winter. It also boasts some of the east coast's most secluded and pristine beaches, with breathtaking coastal views from the ridge tops west across Great Oyster Bay or south to Schouten Island. This tour is never far from the coast, yet still offers a sense of isolation and adventure in a relaxing and non-challenging environment.
We leave Tasmania Wilderness Expeditions' own rural retreat, Base Camp Tasmania, and drive through the picturesque countryside north east of Hobart, through the former fishing villages of Orford, Triabunna and Swansea, to arrive at the National Park headquarters at Coles Bay. Walk through lightly timbered forest with fine
coastal views to our first pristine beach (Hazards Beach). Take a refreshing swim if time and temperature permit. Continue along the beach to rejoin the coastal route flanking Mt Freycinet to our evening campsite at the secluded Cook's Beach nestled among the coastal she oaks. Opportunity to visit Bryans' Corner and Lagoon on an early evening nature walk to enjoy the abundant bird and wildlife.
Take an early morning dip before we retrace our steps along Cooks Beach before turning inland and climbing onto the peninsula's spine through its striking mountain forest scenery. Opportunity to climb Mt Freycinet (620m) and Mt Graham (579m) from the track. Continue through mixed forest and heath thickets to descend to our evening campsite at the spectacular Wineglass Bay.
Another leisurely morning swim, followed by the walk to the end of the bay before the short and steep climb to the saddle on The Hazards with more sensational views back over the bay and ahead to Coles Bay. If time permits, the opportunity to do a quick dash up Mt Amos (454m) for more stunning views
before our return drive to Base Camp Tasmania.
