Accommodated Walking Tours

ACCOMMODATED WALKING TOURS | GENERAL INFORMATION

We have developed our Accommodated Tours for those who would like to experience the Tasmanian Wilderness without carrying a rucksack or camping overnight. These tours are for those who, after a day’s hiking with a lightweight day pack, are happy to settle down each evening in comfortable accommodation with a hearty meal, a hot shower and a fresh bed.

‘Hiking Highlights’ Accommodated Tours

These tours virtually encircle the island, and comprise a succession of day walks – either more or less strenuous – as we travel from one overnight destination to another. We stay for two nights where possible to fully explore that destination’s offerings and there are also several opportunities where you might just like to explore one of our quaint townships, for example: Sheffield the Town of Murals; or Deloraine with its craftwork heritage.

We’ve also included the opportunity to enjoy activities that vary the daily pace and style of the tours:

  • platypi viewing at The Giant’s Table Cabins in Maydena
  • a series of short, gentle exploratory walks on the way to Queenstown from Lake St Clair
  • a film at the art nouveau Palace Cinema* in Queenstown
  • a Gordon River Cruise on Macquarie Harbour at Strahan
  • the nightly Penguin Parade* at Bicheno
  • the exciting ferry trip to and from Maria Island

We commence all tours with an evening dinner and briefing in Hobart on your arrival, and conclude them with our final evening dinner together at the Wrest Point Hotel.

We currently offer a choice of three tours:

Hiking Highlights of Tasmania – 15 days

Hiking Highlights of North and East Tasmania – 11 days

Hiking Highlights of Western Tasmania – 9 days

* Admission fee extra

Accommodation and Day Walks Package

These tour packages are operated from our fully-serviced architect-designed cabins at Base Camp Tasmania, located in Glenfern and set in a quiet and secluded bush valley southwest of New Norfolk high above the Derwent River. The property is protected by a Conservation Covenant (Protected Areas on Private Land) and is also a member of the Wildlife Land Trust, and in this peaceful place, walkers can relax and unwind after a day’s tour and enjoy the natural surroundings.

From Base Camp Tasmania, most destinations in southern Tasmania are readily accessible – you can choose from many of Tasmania’s most spectacular natural sights and walks and get back to the comfort of your cabin in time for dinner!
