A Delightful Coastal Walk on Bruny Island

Bruny Island Day TourBruny Island is reached by ferry from the tiny picturesque port of Kettering, less than an hour south of Hobart on the D’Entrecasteaux Channel. The island consists of a narrow sand isthmus (the “Neck”) joining South and North Bruny Islands, which provided a safe haven to early explorers (Furneaux, Cook, Bligh). Bruny was also the birthplace of Tasmania’s most celebrated Aborigine, Trucanini.

We preface our walk with a quick side-trip to the viewing platform above the Neck before setting off near the island’s airstrip for the beach beside the shallow Big Lagoon, and then on through coastal heathland to the interesting geological formation of Mars Bluff. At low tide we can skirt this feature to seaward, or climb the track behind the Bluff to continue on the beach on the other side of it.

The dolerite columns of the Cape form a scenic and dramatic backdrop to this northern margin of Adventure Bay, and we will find a pleasant spot to lunch and maybe take a quick swim before returning by the same route.
